Shawa’s Origins
The Shawa story traces back to 1935 when F.P Mennell discovered the deposit while prospecting for phosphate rock. The Shawa claims were pegged in 1948 and witnessed their first recorded production between 1948 and 1953, marking the start of our journey.
In 1993, Madame Joelle Briot the proprietor of CMMP (Comptoir de Minéraux et Matieres Premieres) entered into a joint venture with Shinbasi Bank Ltd (Hong Kong) to establish the existing operation. CMMP provided considerable financial investment to bring the project to fruition before Shawa Mine was subsequently purchased by the Imerys group and then subsequently by Samrec Vermiculite in 2013.
Shawa’s Next Chapter
Since then, we have worked tirelessly to develop Shawa Mine, expanding our capacity to beyond 40,000 tonnes per year. Fast forward to today and the next chapter of our journey continues, as we undergo a transformative journey to redefine the Vermiculite industry and provide solutions that matter for all our stakeholders.
We invite you to join us on this journey of growth, innovation, and purpose to shape a better tomorrow for the Vermiculite industry and our community.
